Contrary to popular belief, the Amazon smartphone isn’t an urban legend. We have been hearing for years of an Amazon phone, but this time it looks as though it’s for real. Not only that, there might actually be two phones in the works.
The photos above and below represent a prototype so expect the finished product to look very different. As you can see, a protective shell is around it to hide certain features. This unnamed device is expected to include a 4.7-inch 720p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear main camera, front facing camera, and of course a fully forked version of Android.
We have heard numerous reports that Amazon will include multiple cameras and some sort of 3D software. Six cameras have been confirmed, which include the main rear camera and front-facing camera for video chats. Four other infrared front-facing cameras will be in place at the corners to “facilitate the 3D effects.” These extra cameras will track the user’s face and eyes so that the software can make visual adjustments. What does all of this mean exactly? Supposedly you will be able to see 3D effects without the need for 3D glasses.
These 3D effects won’t be used for just movies, Amazon has plans to incorporate these effects in the UI, as well as icons and wallpapers. Amazon also wants to utilize the effects in Amazon’s services, such as books, music, and the main digital market. Users will be able to see different angles of three-dimensional product images just by moving the phone.
Love or hate Amazon’s forked version of Android, you have to hand it to them for this kind of innovation. Will it be a gimmick? It’s too soon to tell right now, I think we know why Amazon has been taking their time in releasing this phone. They want to get it right. Word is they will unveil it sometime over the next few months. As to the second phone, no word on when that will be released, but it’s likely to be next year.
Does this Amazon smartphone excite you at all?
